Weekly WI: Back Under 200

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday.  The sun is just about to rise and it looks like it will be a beautiful day!

The goal last week was to get the scale back under 200 and that goal was successful.

A few things that contributed to this loss:

Taking a break from alcohol - I had one beer on Saturday.  While not planned, it was delicious!  Other than that, no alcohol last week.

No sweets - I am really needing to dial my sugar tooth back down.  I make it a habit to not eat sweets and with vacation, it was out of control again.  This week I took a step back from sugary treats although some sugar free and carb smart bites were consumed.

Exercise - I hit the gym for a hard TRX bootcamp one day last week and go out for walks on a couple other days.

Cut out the mindless snacking - Although we still consumed several meals out last week, I have been mindlessly snacking i.e. consuming unnecessary points and that needed to come to an end.  There were days I was starving and so I just ate more food.

I feel really good and am glad to see the scale has come back down under 200.  The plan this week is to continue to build on the successes from last week.

Queen Mary & Ronald Regan Presidential Library and Museum

You can read about our Carnival Cruise adventures here ß

We flew into LAX bright and early where Dawny joined us about three hours earlier.  Uber delivered us to the Long Beach port area where we dropped our bags with the porter and made our way on foot to the Queen Mary.

We booked back-to-back one hour guided tours that included both blow decks and above.  We enjoyed the steam and steel tour, which took us through everything needed to make this amazing ship run, the best.  As it turns out, the remainder of the exhibit areas will be opening again later this month.

Our experience getting out of Long Beach was not as smooth.  The cruise port was chaotic and while we tried to save money by taking Uber…not happening.  The wait times were long, and it was hard to get a driver.  We eventually gave up and took a taxi back to LAX.  Lesson learned for next time…just book the cruise line transportation.

We dropped Dawny off at airport security and took the shuttle bus to pick up or rental car, a TESLA!  I had this brilliant idea to rent a Tesla through Hertz since we were only in California for a few hours.  All the fees added up to an expensive ride but it was fun none the less.

We drove our Tesla to the Ronald Regan Presidential Library and Museum.  I would say it drove us, but the self-driving feature is not fully installed.  It did have some sort of fancy cruise control though that lit up the screen and everything.

The museum was great and if you are ever in the area, I highly recommend it.  We enjoyed walking through the exhibits and learning all about President Regan.  I’m not a bit history buff so I didn’t recall (and I was young) the mid-term election landslide win.  Boy you don’t see that these days.  I sort of miss how I country was “back then” and again, I’m a little young to say that.  It sounds like he was good for America, and I miss that.

Carnival Radiance Cruise: Catalina Island & Ensenada

We have been home from our Carnival cruise onboard the Radiance for a week now.  It has been a busy week with both Kenyon and I feeling under the weather at various times.  I am hoping this isn’t a permanent thing post-cruise as we dealt with this issue after our January Vlogger Extravaganza Cruise.

Today I’ll take you through the cruise itself including the two ports of calls my thoughts on Carnival Cruise Line vs. Norwegian Cruise Line.  Next time I’ll recap our pre and post cruise adventures.  (spoiler alert: we still love NCL)

We boarded the Carnival Radiance in Long Beach, California about 2pm.  Once we got onto the ship it was a rush to drop our stuff in our room and grab a bite to eat before the Facebook meet and greet at Red Frog Rum Bar on the Lido deck.  The hours for Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQ was super limited as are the days it is open so we weren’t able to start our trip with BBQ.  Instead, we had Guy’s Burgers.  It was hands down my favorite of the dining options.

We jumped into the meet and greet and while we didn’t participate long, I really enjoyed meeting in person the hosts/moderators of the FB group and others who joined in on the fun.  While we didn’t hang out with the group throughout the cruise, we loved saying hello and checking in when we passed by.  I broke out the new koozie and found a big design flaw that my beer kept falling out the bottom!  Thankfully it was unopened both times but still…major design flaw.

We dined in the main dining room each night.  The waitstaff was very friendly and made the ambiance fun.  The service was slow, and I didn’t feel checked in on as much as when we cruise with NCL.  All the review are correct, the food is just not that great on Carnival (minus the specialty restaurants).

Our first port of call was Catalina Island.  We rented a golf cart and spent an hour exploring as much of the island as we could.  Afterwards we sampled some local beer and ate a famous pink donut before boarding the ship again.

The second port of call was Ensenada.  We wanted to go into “town” and heard about the $4 round trip shuttle.  It turned out to be a dud and a learning experience for next time.  We were dropped off in a tourist area where we wondered a bit, shared some nachos at a local restaurant, and waited way too long get back to the ship on the return shuttle.  I tell ya, my view of Mexico isn’t as glamourous as other people say it is.  Maybe I am missing something?

Our time on the ship was spent playing trivia with a really fun trivia host and super fun guests, sampling many of the drink options, and eating at every restaurant except the buffet and the Fahrenheit steakhouse.  We hit up the 80s party and OMG our cruise director Dieon made my whole cruise.  He has so much energy and is a super fun host.  We also hit up the white-hot party on the final sea day where he danced on the bar in the atrium.

Our FB group hosted a shot glass exchange with about 40 people.  It was a great way to mingle once more with the group and while my shot glass choice was stolen from me, I still left with a cute one from Oregon.

That about wraps up the actual cruise.  Carnival Radiance is showing her age and I really hated the design of the room safe.  The food is nothing to get excited over, but I loved their beer selection.  The other big downer what how stingy they are with the drink package.  For the money you spend, they are very strict about one soda OR bottle of water at one time.  I mean…come on!  You were able to get an alcoholic beverage and a bottle of water but if it was soda, you had to wait 5 minutes to get another bottle of water.  Asking for two bottles, nope, not happening.  While I think the perk of specialty coffee, milkshakes, and bottled water is worth the extra money for the drink package, I’ll take my NCL free at sea over Carnival any day of the week.

Carnival is a budget cruise line, and you can tell.  It was good to experience it and I won’t say I’ll never cruise them again.  If they have the port of call we want, we will sail with them again.  I just can’t find much more appeal than that.

Weekly WI: Facing The Scale

Hello and Happy Tuesday!

I faced the scale today after three weeks away, a vacation, and a week that was no where near on track, the gain is actually manageable.

The only bummer is I was already up three pounds before we left for vacation thus I am now about 6ish pound to my feel good weight.  I have quite the hurdle to get over and I will conquer!

The goal this week is get back under 200 pounds.  I plan to accomplish this by getting back to those tools that helped me be successful in the past.  I am also going to take a break from alcohol this week and get the sugar/treats back out of my (almost daily) diet.

I also plan to get back to a workshop as a member, either virtual or in-person.  I need the accountability and I really miss being able to share as a member thus adding one more layer to getting back to what made me so successful in the past.

I’ll be back with my travel recap.

A Much Needed Break

I am ready for a break.  It is well deserved and 100% earned.  This year has been rough so far and sometimes I feel like I can’t juggle it all.  Our staffing at work has finally come full circle and we actually have filled shifts and semi-happy staff.  It is about time.  I tell my trainees all the time that I am really good as a dispatcher, really good as a supervisor, and really good as a trainer…but I am not really good at doing them all at once.  Not even two at once and I’ve had to juggle all three.  It is exhausting.

I thought a break was coming but I am pretty sure I’ll have to jump back into the trainer role mid-May.  For now, let’s just enjoy vacation!

I am stoked for my first Carnival cruise.  I can’t wait to eat all the yummy food and drink all the yummy drinks.  Downtime with my husband and my friend Dawny is also going to be the best.  I am ready to get this party started.

We have booked tour tickets to tour The Queen Mary and that makes me excited too.  When we arrive back in Long Beach, we will rent a car from LAX and tour the Regan Presidential Library & Museum before a late flight home.  It will be a fast trip and there is just never enough time for it all…but it will be awesome.  I’m looking forward to it.
